How M&S's Beverage Overhaul Exposes Retail Flaws

Vertical Vendors • 20 May 2026

Recently, Marks & Spencer announced a significant operational shift within its stores that highlights a major changing trend in consumer habits.

According to reports in The Grocer, the retailer is undertaking a massive overhaul of its beers, wines, and spirits (BWS) division. Their focus has purposefully shifted towards mid-strength drinks and canned tequila products. Discussing this strategy, M&S stated that "nearly one in four UK consumers were now opting for lower-strength drinks in the summer".

This is a calculated commercial decision by a premium UK retailer to capture high-margin sales during the highly competitive peak trading months. The ready-to-drink (RTD) category, particularly premium canned cocktails, is experiencing massive, sustained growth. Shoppers want the convenience of a portable format, but they refuse to compromise on flavour or quality. They are willing to pay a premium for expertly crafted beverages.

However, this strategic pivot introduces a serious merchandising challenge for both store managers and supplier brands.

Selling premium beverages in aluminium cans requires precise, high-quality presentation. If a retailer or brand relies on standard grocery shelving or temporary promotional units, they risk severely devaluing their entire premiumisation strategy.

As founders of Vertical Vendors, we see this exact issue consistently across the grocery sector, where brands fail at the final hurdle on the shop floor.

The Premiumisation Paradox in Retail Merchandising

When a drinks brand launches a high-end canned tequila cocktail or botanical spritz, every physical touchpoint must communicate quality.

The liquid inside the can might be exceptional, but the physical presentation dictates the initial purchase decision.

Unfortunately, many global brands still default to shipping premium products in temporary, corrugated cardboard display units. This is a false economy that actively damages brand perception.

These single-use cardboard units are inherently flawed for merchandising heavy liquid stock. They sag under the weight of multipacks and absorb moisture from store cleaning machines, leading to structural failure within days of deployment. They also scuff easily in high-footfall aisles, leaving the display looking tired, battered, and neglected.

Placing a luxury product in a flimsy, damaged unit immediately strips away its premium status. If you are charging a premium price point for an RTD product, the merchandising fixture must reflect that inherent value. Cardboard simply cannot deliver the structural authority required for high-end grocery environments.

The visual contrast between a sophisticated, foil-detailed can design and a crushed cardboard shelf is stark, and consumers notice it immediately.

Absolute Planogram Integrity with Patented Mechanics

Maintaining a pristine, fully stocked shop floor is a constant, uphill battle for store managers. Retail teams are already stretched incredibly thin, dealing with rising operating costs, strict budgets, and persistent labour shortages. They simply do not have the spare hours required to continuously tidy, pull forward, and face-up temporary cardboard displays throughout trading hours.

This operational reality is exactly why we engineered our standard and 4-pack units. We build our units with patented spring-loaded systems that automatically push the next can to the top the moment a shopper takes one. Your brand always appears perfectly stocked and perfectly in view. The presentation remains consistently sharp and fully faced from the moment the store opens until the doors close for the night.

Our displays secure the absolute planogram integrity that luxury grocery environments demand. Crucially, there is zero daily maintenance required from shop floor staff. The product remains front and centre, driving impulse purchases without adding a single minute to the retailer's daily labour costs.

It is a commercially savvy approach that pleases both the brand director and the store manager.

Capturing the Summer Drinks Opportunity

As the crucial summer trading period approaches, supermarkets are heavily backing the alternative drinks category. Alongside M&S's major push into canned tequila, the broader retail market is seeing huge shifts towards new beverage formats.

Recent industry data highlights this momentum, showing that alternative formats like fruit lager have seen sales surge by an impressive 50%.

Shoppers are actively seeking out these convenient, premium formats for picnics, barbecues, and outdoor events. However, simply getting your product listed by a major grocer is not enough to guarantee success. You must win the battle at the point of purchase.

You need a structural presence that commands attention, protects your brand equity, and disrupts the shopper journey in heavily contested retail aisles.

Our bespoke POS dispensing systems are specifically designed to present premium canned lines with undeniable authority. When a consumer reaches for a high-margin cocktail, they should be interacting with a premium, heavy-duty fixture. It reinforces the perceived value of the product and secures the sale.

Do not let cheap corrugated cardboard undermine your hard work this summer.
